10 Underrated Current Crime TV Shows You Need To Be Watching

5. Ray Donovan

Showtime

Liev Schreiber delivers a career-best performance as Ray Donavan - the troubled alpha of a tough Boston family that has uprooted to LA - his macho persona mask a deeply broken human in a fascinating central arc. Yet, regardless of the name in the title, this show is really about its ensemble.

Paula Malcomson is his hard-as-nails yet affectionate wife, Dash Mihok and Eddie Marsden the weary brothers, but Jon Voight as the conniving yet loveable father steals every moment he’s on screen, in a tour de force performance that stands as peak work. Certainly, the conflict and infighting are intriguing, but the show works best when these eccentric characters come together as a powerful unit.

While the crime elements can feel slightly repetitive as Ray scrambles to sort out that given season's problems, the true strength lies in the character drama and sharp writing. Showrunner Ann Biederman examines the destructive nature of the macho persona, as well as the side-effects of blind loyalty in constantly deep and biting ways.

Season 5 was a true game-changing to the regular dynamic, with a beyond bleak cliffhanger leading to some very interesting places. It's never too late to catch up.
