10 Underrated Current Sci-Fi TV Shows You Need To Be Watching

3. Altered Carbon

The Expanse
Netflix

After a heavy promotional push, this expensive Netflix show had a lot of eyes turned to it. Yet, after watching the first three episodes, viewers dropped like flies and left this production in the dust.

Pity for them, since they missed out on an optically lush and captivating world with an affluent lore, based in a future world where people’s ‘souls’ are essentially stored on disks, meaning death is just an inconvenience instead of a finality.

Joel Kinnaman, in hulking form, plays the new body of a long-dead mercenary, refreshed to help solve a complex mystery plot. The actor is a likeable and impressively physical presence as the charming tough guy, yet the B-plot of his past life - an epic Galactic tale of war and romance - manages to intrigue more even, and opens the confined main plot in a much bigger and fascinating manner.

Certainly, there are flaws, as not all the supporting cast endear, the earlier episodes reference Blade Runner excessively, and its exposition can come fast and heavy. Yet the world building is satisfying and its fiercely original concept of 'body-jumping' leads to some subversive storytelling with imaginative twists. On a superficial level, it also contains lush production value that will match any recent Hollywood production.

Unfortunately with that high bar comes an expensive price tag, so give this one a second chance and help justify Netflix picking it up for a potential mouth-watering second season.
