4. Buffy The Vampire Slayer - Hush

Bojack Horseman
Mutant Enemy

An episode without dialogue.

No-dialogue episodes are becoming more and more common, notably Mr Robot and Bojack Horseman have experimented with the format in the last few years. But at the time, Buffy the Vampire Slayer's fourth season episode, Hush, was well ahead of its time. Using the artistic freedom of the sci-fi genre, writer Joss Whedon creates a silent setting as well as a terrifying new enemy in the Buffy franchise.

The situation arises in Sunnydale, the fictional town, that eerie demons known as "the Gentlemen" steal everyone's voices and the characters must fight using new methods of communicating with one another. The concept elevated the tension of the show and allowed Whedon to break out his formulaic bubble.

His decision to write this episode came when receiving praise for his dialogue. He felt he wanted to prove that the dialogue wasn't the only important aspect to his show. He definitively succeeded as Hush received enormous praise for its originality and execution and the episode was nominated for an Emmy.
