10 Unluckiest Doctor Who Characters

3. The Doctor

The Doctor's life is a rollercoaster of ups and downs, never settling on a happy state for too long. And when those downs hit? They're lower than the lowest of valleys.

This is a character who is basically a bad luck magnet. They make lots of great friends... but those friends always end up dying, or leaving. They save lots of lives... but plenty of other lives are lost. They fall in love with people... but these romances are always doomed. The Doctor just can't catch a break.

Even the character's day-to-day life is a comedy of errors. The TARDIS is old and unreliable, constantly teleporting to the wrong place - sometimes on purpose - and regularly breaking down to boot.

And on top of all that misery, the Doctor recently learned that their entire backstory had been hidden from them by their own people. Stupid pompous Time Lords.

On the plus side though, the Doctor normally gets a happy ending at the conclusion of each series - even though there's always more doom and gloom to come.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
