10 Urgent Remedies Needed For Doctor Who

1. Better Executed Political Subtext

Doctor Who has always been a progressive show. Heck, you just need to look at the title character to see just how embedded it is in the show's psyche; The Doctor's pacifist nature and anti-authoritarian stance being their primary characteristics. This is why the blatant smashing over our heads of 'important messages' is just not needed.

While the 'preaching' actually wasn't too bad in Whittaker's first season, the epidemic has hit hard this year, with longwinded speeches on the environment, cybersecurity and the overuse of plastics saturating our screens. The problem is not with the messages being put forward, but with the woeful execution, with messages delivered with all the subtlety of a Benny Hill skit.

The key to tackling topical issues is by ensuring there is discussion of why various viewpoints or actions are taken. It doesn't mean that the 'right' answer can't be inferred, but not treating the audience like they're idiots will actually help get the desired message across.

Imagine how much better Arachnids in the UK would have been if Chris Noth's Trump persona had been allowed to justify the decision to execute the Queen spider because it was the merciful thing to do? Or if in Spyfall, the Doctor used applications available through the world wide web to stop the oncoming Alien/Master threat, thus examining the advantages of the new technology, rather than just the flaws? Now there's some episodes worth watching!
