10 US Adaptations Of UK TV Shows That Sucked
4. Viva Laughlin
For anyone who doesn't remember BBC's "Blackpool", don't worry about it. The show only lasted seven episodes before disappearing into obscurity and honestly, you didn't miss much.
The show could essentially be described as Broadchurch with singing, as a seaside town is rocked by the murder of a young man in an amusements arcade. David Tennant is once again tasked with solving the case, and bringing peace to the community.
Blackpool didn't really fare too well in its home country, but somehow, it resonated with North America in a big way. Advertised as "Viva Blackpool", the show was nominated for a Golden Globe, won a Peabody Award and came away with a couple of awards at Canada's Banff Television Festival. Naturally, networks paid attention and an American adaptation was quickly put into development.
The issue here was that, the source material really wasn't good enough to be adapted in the first place. Viewers were left with a sour taste in their mouths, as not even Hugh Jackman could save this train wreck. The show was cancelled after its second episode as the New York Times asked if it was "the worst show in the history of television".
