10 Walking Dead Fates Worse Than Death

4. Forced To Kill Your Own Mother - Killer Within

With our core group fresh off of having to amputate one of Hershel's legs, the third season's Killer Within outing was rough, rough ride for the mainstays of The Walking Dead - particularly for the Grimes family.

This is the episode where Lori Grimes dies during childbirth, and it's not just Lori's death that's traumatic for all involved, but it's the way in which this all plays out.

For Maggie, she's the person who has to perform an emergency makeshift caesarean section on Lori once she suddenly goes into labour. Without any medical supplies to hand, it's the shock and blood loss caused by this that ultimately results in Lori's death.

In addition to Maggie, Carl Grimes not only witnesses all of this, but he also has to then put a bullet through his mother's head in order to stop her reanimating. As for Rick, he later discovers his wife's body being ravaged by a walker.

Killer Within was a brutal, depressing episode of The Walking Dead, but the main silver linings to come out of all of this was that baby Judith survived this ordeal, and that it also added a much needed new layer to the Carl character.
