10 Ways Buffy The Vampire Slayer Was Almost Totally Different
7. Spike And Drusilla Were Originally From The American South
The iconic cockney accent of the vampire duo Spike and Drusilla was perfect for the tone of Buffy The Vampire Slayer. The two had such an unhinged menacing energy that got completely undercut by the out-of-place accent they had. It's exactly what the show needed and it's probably why the two became such hits with the fanbase.
Now, try to imagine those same strange yet oddly intimidating vampires, but as cowboys. Doesn't quite roll off the tongue the same does it? The truth is James Marsters actually auditioned for the role of Spike with a Texan accent, and the writers even considered having the two use that accent. Juliet Landau, who played the other half of the duo, stated that in the end it didn't work out and so the two became English and Marsters managed to get dialect coaching from the show's resident Brit: Anthony Head.
If you're reading this and find yourself mourning the loss and wondering about what could have been, don't worry as Marsters got to flex his acting muscles in season 4 when Spike pretended to be Xander's friend from Texas. While Sarah Michelle Gellar complained about her struggles with the valley-girl lingo, poor Marsters had to tackle TWO different dialects!
