10 Ways Buffy The Vampire Slayer Was Almost Totally Different
6. The Deaths In The Show Kept Changing
In a show where the main character kills vampires for a living, you come to expect a lot of death and even grow immune to it. But there are some deaths that still stick with us; some people we lose that we can't help but mourn. Buffy does that best. It gives you a show full of death, where a seemly main character dies in the pilot episode, and still manages to hit you hard with an emotional loss.
Joss Whedon must have known the importance of getting these deaths right, because many of the characters we lose could have died (or even not died at all) at completely different times! Most of these death changes came about because of fan reaction to the show and its beloved cast of characters. Both Buffy's mum Joyce and teacher Miss Calendar were supposed to die in season 1. Miss Calendar died in season 2 by the hands of Angelus, although at that point she was supposed to survive and Oz was supposed become the first victim, but the fans loved Oz and his relationship with Willow.
And if that isn't confusing enough, it is said that if Seth Green hadn't left the show to pursue his film career, he would have been the death that became the catalyst for Dark Willow. Sadly Tara became that sacrifice and although Whedon tried to write Tara back to life on multiple occasions during season 7, Amber Benson's schedule meant it just couldn't happen.
