Whatever his faults may be, one of the Doctors highest priorities is always the safety of his companions; to the point of sending them away against their will when facing great danger like in Logopolis (1981) and The Parting Of The Ways (2005). And weve already seen shades of this before in The Time Of The Doctor (2013) when the Doctor sends Clara away from Trenzalore twice to protect her from the siege. Using this for Claras final departure would be an interesting spin on it since it has never been done permanently and would open up a lot of doors both for character moments, and for the Doctor facing a danger so cataclysmic that he leaves Clara behind permanently. Though it would be a bit repetitive and at the same time, the Doctor has only tried to send his Companions away when going into a situation he thinks is unwinnable. So how it could work for a situation that the Doctor will obviously survive is questionable.
