10 Ways The Simpsons Could Save Itself

1. Introduce Season-Long Story Arcs

This might well be a controversial idea, but the introduction of season-long arcs could actually do wonders to improve how watchable The Simpsons would be in future seasons. The Simpsons in the '90s had self-contained episodes like just about any other animated sitcom for an obvious reason - simply put, more people watch a show when they can drop in and out of it as they please. The Simpsons carried on this method into the 2000s and the 2010s, and unfortunately the episodes are nowhere near as fresh as before. It's obvious that something drastic needs to be done, and perhaps adding some serialised elements to it could be the solution. In the current golden era of television, almost all of the most talked-about shows are serialised. Even a lot of the shows with high ratings which are essentially "case of the week" shows have some overarching story to them. It's a satisfying thing to follow a character through a journey for ten or twenty weeks, and even if it was something small like Bart winning over the girl he likes, it could make all the difference. Going to almost soap opera levels wouldn't be a good idea of course, but just the addition of something small in there every week or so; a nod to the dedicated viewer, might just save the show. For a least a few more years anyway. Hope you've enjoyed reading this article. Tampering with a classic, even in these later years is controversial and I'm well aware of this!
