Quite a number of the show's best episodes dealt with popular themes and celebrities (Homer And The Bat, Homerpalooza and The Springfield Files to name but a few) and the show continues to do this today. Time has been kind to most of the classic episodes of this nature, but that's because they were hilarious to begin with. Most of the later episodes that rely heavily on current popular trends are sub-par and rely too much on the particular guest-starring celebrity in question as a hook for the episode, leaving little room for actual substance or clever comedy in the scripts. Case in point: The Season 23 episode Lisa Goes Gaga is a terribly unfunny episode that cares less about plot than it does about making exhausted jokes at guest star Lady Gaga's expense. There are too many episodes like this in recent seasons and there's just no way they are going to hold up well over time, not even for the most hardcore celebrity fans.
