It's been established that The Simpsons isn't as funny as it used to be. But another common complaint of the later years is that it lacks a lot of the heart, too. Everyone's favourite yellow family have always been more like The Bluths of Arrested Development than say, the extended family of Modern Family. They are a dysfunctional bunch and quite often, their problems feel real. In it's prime, it gave the family real dilemmas to deal with and although it was always okay in the end, at least it felt kind of natural. Even though Homer has screwed up his relationship with Marge a billion times, he always came through and his heart always prevailed. The show was once great at these displays of reconciliation and showed great affection towards the characters' relationships. Homer has always been on the slower side, but lately the writers push his stupidity to its limits and in the process, a lot of his warmth is sacrificed. These days he feels more Peter Griffin-esque than the Homer Simpson you once loved, and as the head of the family, with his lack of heart, the rest follow suite. The writers need to weight up the importance of laughs against maintaining character's personality.
