The finale of Battlestar Galactica was many things. It was an epic final battle between the crew of the Galactica and the Cylons. It was controversial. It divided the fanbase, and to some fans, it was also much darker than we were led to believe.

Essentially, the ending of Galactica sees the colonists discover our Earth in the early stone age before homo sapiens had even begun to use tools.

In order to not recreate the mistakes of the last colonies, everyone decides to give up on technology and begin humanity completely anew. The colonists even went so far as to send the Galactica and all of the colonist's spaceships into the sun.

We are then led to believe that the colonists lived peacefully and integrated themselves with our ancestors, eventually leading to us in the modern era.

However, one fan theory proposes that after the colonists landed on Earth and tried to begin anew, they all quickly died off, unable to adapt to a hostile environment without their advanced technology.

This theory actually has some proof, as at the very end of the show we are shown Gaius Baltar and Number Six wandering around our Earth discussing how we will inevitably kill ourselves with technology again.

As they wander around, we see the remains of Hera, Sharon, and Karl Agathon being excavated by modern humans. The thinking was that the colonists died off before they could integrate or reproduce to start a new species.
