10 Worst Doctor Who Episodes According To YOU
9. The Lazarus Experiment
Onto the Tenth Doctor now, and you were probably expecting Love & Monsters and Fear Her to be his entries on this list. So were we! Readers of DWM weren't on the same page however, meaning that at least one of those infamous duds will not feature here.
The Lazarus Experiment isn’t often mentioned as being irredeemably bad, so we're chalking its low ranking down to it being so forgettable that people don’t actually remember it.
In this episode, Mark Gatiss Benjamin Buttons himself into an iffy wig, before transforming into The Mummy’s Scorpion King (with CGI effects of around the same quality). He then chases the Doctor and Martha for half an hour before getting spooked by a pipe organ, and falling to his undignified, naked death.
It's okay though – it's Mark Gatiss, he'll be sure to cameo again soon enough!
There are a couple of interesting conversations about immortality sprinkled in throughout The Lazarus Experiment, but it’s not enough to save what is essentially 45 minutes of corridor chases. It might've worked if the episode leaned more into its horror setup, but it doesn’t, and having Gatiss’ face photoshopped onto a mess of limbs doesn't really sell the monster.
The supporting cast doesn't do much to elevate the episode either, and the Jones' remain the weakest family dynamic of the RTD1 era. The series never really knows what to do with them – they don’t have a patch on the Tylers or the Nobles, despite them having future superstars in their midst with Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Adjoa Andoh.
