10 Worst Doctor Who Moments Of 2024
3. Where’s The Whoniverse?
In January 2023, RTD confirmed that it was “time for the next stage for Doctor Who”, and that spinoffs were on the way as part of the show’s new collab with Disney.
Two years on, we’re basically still waiting.
Sure, we’ve had a snazzy Whoniverse logo and the announcement of The War Between the Land and the Sea, but we've no idea when that's going to hit our screens. We’ve also had ancillary content like the colourisations and Tales of the TARDIS, but they’re not fully-fledged spinoffs in the way that Torchwood, The Sarah Jane Adventures, and Class (remember that one?) were.
Maybe our expectations were too high, but it does feel like we should've had more announcements by now. What does the future of Doctor Who look like? Where's the roadmap, what's the vision? All the promise of a Whoniverse and spinoffs galore has faded away to the point that we don't even know when to expect a third season of the main show.
The execution of the Whoniverse is muddled too. If you’re a UK fan you get access to most of the show’s back catalogue, plus the existing spinoffs and a wealth of other content. But if you’re an international viewer, you simply get the episodes released as part of RTD2 – a far cry from having the whole Doctor Who universe at your fingertips.
That’s not to take away from the team’s efforts so far, or to suggest that any of this is straightforward. But we're nowhere close to the Whoniverse we were promised.
