10 Worst Doctor Who Prosthetics Ever

8. Skarasen - Terror Of The Zygons (1975)

Here’s one that did ruin an episode.

The Zygons have become something of a cult favourite since their introduction in 1975, so much so that they were featured heavily in the 50th anniversary special in 2013. But their first episode took a serious hit towards the end.

The fourth Doctor, Sarah Jane and Harry join UNIT in Scotland to investigate the destruction of an oil rig. Surprise, it turns out it was those pesky shape shifters the Zygons, but they weren’t alone: they brought a creature called the Skarasen with them and grew it to enormous proportions with cyborg technology. Of course, the writers play up the links to the Loch Ness Monster and it probably should have followed Nessy’s tactic of remaining hidden.

When we finally get a glimpse of this huge sea monster it was so bad the director made the effort of showing it only when they absolutely had to. The horrible look of the ‘monster’ is rightly bashed but the rest of the story and music is recognised as a strong outing for Tom Baker’s Doctor. The end is just sorely hurt by the reveal.

John Stothard hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
