10 Worst Episodes In The Stargate Franchise
1. Emancipation - Stargate SG-1
In the modern day, representation in media is a hot button topic which needs to be addressed and considered by anybody hoping to make film or television. With more conversations than ever surrounding the depiction of minorities, be they ethnic, cultural, sexual or otherwise, stories are being told showing a much more diverse and nuanced world that benefits the disenfranchised and finally gives them the voice. As a result of this, some of the film and television we grew up with has not aged well, and SG-1's first season episode Emancipation is one such episode.
Emancipation finds SG-1 on the planet Simarka, where they discover the Shavadai, Mongol like nomads with some very archaic attitudes towards the rights of women, and who take an immediate interest in Captain Samantha Carter. What follows is a painfully dated trek through mansplaining, misogyny, objectification, public execution and implied rape, alongside a helpful dose of Mongolian stereotyping, with women of the of the Shavadai only getting their rights when Carter proves herself to be brave and useful.
Sci-fi as a genre has proven itself countless times to be an effective and progressive force for good and change in the world, but this is one episode that the producers probably won't want shared around too much.
