The Gang is what makes the dynamic of the show work. However, that does not mean that the writers don't try to take the focus away from them every now and again. We have seen some enjoyable episodes that go in this direction, but most of the time departing from the leading group ends up feeling mundane.

Cricket is one of the best things about the show. Therefore hearing that an episode would be based on what he gets up to outside of Paddy's pub had potential. But it ultimately fails on two primary levels.

Firstly, a lot of what makes Cricket funny is his connection to The Gang. The fact that his horrible life is a direct result of their involvement is the basis of his journey. The way that they treat him makes the joke centre around how toxic they are without even realising. By putting Cricket on his own that joke is no longer present.

Secondly, the episode takes the direction of seeing Cricket get his life together. Although this ultimately fails, it still never feels like what we want to see from him. He has the worst life imaginable, and that's the character's identity. To see him start to live comfortably just doesn't fit in with the established joke.
