10 Worst Futurama Episodes
9. The Butterjunk Effect
Futurama and goofy sports have gone hand in hand a few times, and it can often lead to mixed results. Sadly, "The Butterjunk Effect" is easily on the losing side of that game, as not only is it lacking in creative humour, but it has some frighteningly awkward moments that make the outing far too mean spirited.
This episode takes place after Amy and Leela enrol in a Butterfly Derby, where women dress in butterfly costumes and fight each other. They're both disastrous at the sport and lose all of their matches. But then, they discover Nectar, a substance that helps them grow stronger and start to dominate their opponents.
Seeing the pair get super athletic and massive is an amusing sight, but the Nectar comes with some horrible side-effects that include heightened aggression. This causes both of them to become abusive towards their respective partners, Fry and Kif, and there's very little humour to find in it.
Besides the uncomfortable abusive moments, the episode revolves entirely around Amy and Leela's addiction to the Nectar. It makes the episode feel very out of place in the wholesome show that, while dark, was never this abrasive.
