10 Worst Futurama Episodes
7. Leela And The Genestalk
One of the most hilarious and enduring aspects of this classic cartoon series were the mutants. The sewer dwellers living in Old New York were a bright bunch of creative characters, and they taught a surprisingly wholesome message about being comfortable with your flaws. However, this episode worked hard to counteract all of that.
After discovering that Leela is suffering from squidification - meaning that she will continue to sprout tentacles until she's a slithering mass of them - the crew are distraught. They attempt to help her by selling the Planet Express ship, but Fry ends up trading it for two magic beans. Eventually, after climbing the beanstalk that sprouts, Leela encounters Mom and her genetic engineering facility.
Overall, the outings use of the classic fairy tale feels entirely out of place, as the concept of genetic engineering is interesting enough to stand on its own. This makes the episode feel disjointed and lacking coherence.
Additionally, the ending makes Leela out to be entirely hypocritical, as she spends the whole episode criticising Mom for her genetic engineering projects but willingly takes up her offer to revert her to normal. While it's easy to understand why she'd want to return to her regular life, it made her entire arc in the episode feel pointless.
