10 Worst Futurama Episodes
6. A Leela Of Her Own
Turanga Leela is one of the most consistent characters in the show, as you understand her personality right off the bat. She's a no-nonsense badass who, while full of insecurities, is easily the toughest member of the Planet Express crew. So, seeing her become the first female athlete in a sport was an exciting prospect, but the show swerved us with this one.
"A Leela Of Her Own" followed the titular character's professional involvement in the future's version of Baseball, known as Blernsball. Thanks to her lack of depth perception, she's constantly knocking other players out with her poor throws, which helps her become a novelty act, causing her to be hated by other women who want to join the sport seriously.
While seeing Leela vulnerable is hilarious, it feels awfully out of character for her to be terrible at a sport. It took a character we'd come to know as a physically impressive specimen, and made her seem somewhat pathetic.
Additionally, seeing Leela struggle to become better at Blernsball and prove herself is full of sporting movie clichés that make it a dull watch, and although they subvert the ending by seeing her fail to get better, it doesn't make the episode feel any less trope-filled.
