10 Worst Guest Stars In Doctor Who History

6. Joseph Furst

Alas, with half of the tale no longer with us (and the recently recovered episode still to be made widely available), Furst's turn as Zaroff, the nutty professor of Atlantis tale The Underwater Menace, is mostly only able to be 'fully appreciated' on audio. However, it is such a bad one that pictures aren't needed to convince the listener that this is a truly abysmal guest turn. To be fair, the whole of The Underwater Menace is pretty awful. The footage that remains looks cheap and the principal creatures of the tale, The Fish People, appear to have been realised by covering actors in pineapple rings. They are a formidable foe, having a penchant for throwing shells at you if you mock them. Furst was widely regarded as a great actor so one can imagine he read the script, looked at the sets and costumes and thought, "This is a comedy, right?". His accent is so thick you could cut down a tree with it and he would have been a natural for 'Allo 'Allo. His overplaying of every line reaches its zenith in the infamous episode three cliffhanger when he utters the immortal line, "Nuffink in ze vurld cen stoph me now!". Well, the people watching could certainly think of a few things.
