Just barely edging out Angel's hilarious puppet episode "Smile Time" is Buffy's legendary musical episode from season six, "Once More, with Feeling."

Perhaps the quintessential example of a show's cast and crew committing fully to a barmy concept, the episode sees Sunnydale's residents compelled to sporadically break into song by a demon, in turn forcing them to reveal their hidden truths.

Series creator Joss Whedon had wanted to make a musical episode since the start of Buffy, and ended up writing all of the music himself, while the cast were put through extensive singing and dancing lessons to hone their chops.

What's so brilliant about Once More, with Feeling is that it heightens the world of Buffy without ever going too silly, because there's an internal logic to the singing itself and the lyrics actually unfurl crucial character development.

The songs themselves may not be classics, but between the diversity of the music on offer and the gusto of the cast - despite many of them apparently struggling through it - it's as delightfully peculiar as Buffy ever got.
