10 WTF TV Episodes That Came Totally Out Of Nowhere

2. "Fly" - Breaking Bad

Depending on who you ask, "Fly" is either one of the greatest Breaking Bad episodes of all time or one of the worst.

A quintessential example of a "bottle" episode - an episode produced for a smaller budget with a limited cast and locations - Fly takes place almost entirely within the meth superlab as Walt (Bryan Cranston) and Jesse (Aaron Paul) attempt to swat a fly which has found its way inside.

The episode largely ditches the overarching narrative and focuses instead on developing the characters of Walt and Jesse, given that no other major cast members appear throughout.

Thanks to both a sharp, character-focused script and Rian Johnson's tight direction, Fly is a terrific piece of economic storytelling, even if it's easy to see why many balked at how unexpected uneventful it was in terms of the bigger picture.

You can't get away with these types of episodes too often in a show's run, but at this point in Breaking Bad's tenure it had certainly earned an hour of relative quiet.
