11 Biggest Problems With The Chris Chibnall Doctor Who Era

5. The Political Commentary Is Badly Done

As mentioned earlier, much of the criticism of recent Doctor Who has focused on the show being 'too woke' and this is rather tiresome. Firstly, Doctor Who has always been left-wing in ideology (remember, the Daleks are based on the Nazis) and secondly, ideology alone does not make a show bad. Nevertheless, there is a fair amount to criticise with the Chibnall era in that its political messages are so on-the-nose and badly written.

Rosa and Demons of the Punjab are exceptions since they did their political commentary just fine, but most of the others have fallen flat when they've tried to do this. As aforementioned, the Donald Trump-like character in Arachnids in the UK was a dreadful villain who felt more like some laughably bad YouTube parody of the man, not a character in a prestigious television series.

Similarly, other episodes have delivered anti-prejudice and eco-friendly messages (such as The Witchfinders, Orphan 55 and Praxeus) and while such episodes meant very well, unfortunately these messages were delivered in such a forced, un-subtle way that they just didn't land at all, and instead felt both silly and incredibly patronising.
