Ruthless, vindictive, power-hungry all fitting descriptions of Kevin Spaceys President Frank Underwood, but equally so of his wife Claire (played brilliantly by Robin Wright). The show has done a great job of setting her up to be more than a match for her husband, however it has usually involved them working together. Season 3 begins to unravel that, with Claire eventually leaving him at the end. Frank will bully and manipulate anyone he can in his singleminded pursuit of power, but the one person he cannot do this to is his wife. Claire is just as responsible for getting him to the White House, and without her hell struggle to stay there.
