Putting all speculation about the wasps aside for the minute (more of that soon), Simon Donald was very clear that the initial outbreak of the first season as been contained and dealt with. There won't be a flair up, and that was never the intention for the second season.

So where will Fortitude gets its particular brand of the supernatural from?

The most compelling theory is that the second season will focus more on the characters who were touched by evil and survived: predominantly Liam, of course, who has been ruined by his experiences. If Elena survives, you have to suspect she will share flashes of what he is experiencing, though she clearly didn't manage to kill her intended victim.

Could Liam progress into a traumatised serial killer type, in the grandest horror tradition? That first season could well be considered the archetypical monster origin, after all, and it would be intriguing to see an isolated community terrorised by a known threat. Plus they could use Elena as an insider Hannibal Lecter type figure to find out what the "possession" did to a human mind.

Or will the show just go utterly bonkers and adopt a "monster a season" approach, and just pretend the frozen town is like Buffy's Hellmouth?
