11 Things AMC Wants You To Forget About The Walking Dead

4. The Attempted Rape

Given it's set during a zombie apocalypse, it's no real surprise that The Walking Dead contains all manner of murders and other such atrocities. However, there was one occasion more than any other where some people felt it crossed the line.

It happened during Season 3, when the Governor threatens Maggie with rape. Although he doesn't actually go through with it, it's still a traumatising moment for Maggie, and the scene caused a furore for a couple of reasons.

One is the use of rape as a plot device - something The Walking Dead, to its credit, has largely avoided, and also something Game of Thrones has had various problems with. The other was the portrayal of the assault, which drew complaints for being eroticised and exploitive.

The show did show the impact of the event on Maggie, but it's telling that it hasn't really featured sexual assault since, the major instance being the threat to Sasha, which is used to introduce Negan's 'no rape' policy.
