The Pilot was the debut episode of Doctor Who's tenth season, the last one to feature Peter Capaldi in the title role. It represented something of a soft reboot for the series, positioning the character in a way that was completely different to anything we'd seen before.

Suddenly, the Doctor had relocated to earth full-time and taken a job as a lecturer at the fictional St. Luke's University. Along with this new situation, he had a new mission--keeping an eye on a mysterious vault that is hidden beneath the campus. Nardole (Matt Lucas) is still with him, having taken it upon himself to make sure the Doctor doesn't shirk this duty.

Into this comes Bill, a new companion played by Pearl Mackie, whose liveliness and curiosity sparks fresh life in the Doctor. The new dynamic amongst the cast and the unique narrative direction gave the show a new tone, and allowed it to redefine itself for the audience
