The most infamous example of The Walking Dead misleading viewers over a potential death, and one that with hindsight is a sign of the show slipping into a seemingly irreversible decline.

Glenn was a huge fan-favourite when this happened, but one who was expendable, so it was feasible he had actually been killed off. Except, as the episodes went on, it became implausible that they'd leave such a big character's fate up in the air for so long if he was actually dead, and increasingly hard to believe they'd killed him in such a fashion.

Still, they dragged it out and then dragged it out some more, before eventually revealing that, although it looked as if a huge hoard of walkers was tearing him apart, it was actually Nicholas' lifeless body they were dining on. And that, even though it seemed as if he had no possible means of escape, he'd actually managed to slide underneath the dumpster and survive.

And then they killed him off a few episodes later anyway.
