12 Abandoned Doctor Who Subplots
10. The Ungolden Age Of Harriet Jones
"I thought I knew the name. Harriet Jones. Future prime minister, elected for three successive terms, the architect of Britain's Golden Age."
We find ourselves in the honeymoon period of this Golden Age in The Christmas Invasion. Us Brits are leading the way in space probe exploration, and, more importantly, we're £18 a week better off! As the Ninth Doctor would say: fantastic, absolutely fantastic.
But there's a new new Doctor Harriet has to confront after ordering the destruction of the Sycorax spaceship.
It was, arguably, justified - she saw two people callously murdered right in front of her by the Sycorax leader, and the Doctor isn't always around to save the day. Combined with the Doctor saying "the human race is drawing attention to itself. Every day you're sending out probes and messages and signals. This planet's so noisy. You're getting noticed more and more. You'd better get used to it", he inadvertently pushes her into that unenviable moral dilemma. To borrow a WhoCulture article title, the Doctor was actually a bit of a dick.
Less Golden Age, more golden goose. Oh well, this Harold Saxon sounds like a promising chap.
