12 Awful TV Shows That Were Cancelled Before You Even Saw Them

5. My Mother The Car

Tvcars 17 Mymotherthecar 220617 You heard that right. My mother, the car. If you ignore the fact that it makes absolutely zero sense to have a person reincarnated as an inanimate object, the show's concept isn't that terrible, and in fact, it's immensely satisfying to think of this fate being karmic retribution for really horrible drivers. My Mother The Car was one of the many fantasy comedies that came out during the 1960s, it just wasn't quite as good as any of the others. It starred Jerry Van Dyke (Dick's younger brother) as an attorney who discovers that the old 1928 touring car he's just purchased actually houses his deceased mother's eternal soul, who speaks to him through the car radio, like Knight Rider, only not at all. Although baby boomers may have a certain level of nostalgia for it, most critics and audiences at the time derided the show. The show lasted just short of one season (not counting the unaired pilot) before being cancelled, and Van Dyke recalled that the final episode of the show was interrupted by a NASA space program news report, and after it ended they just never went back to My Mother The Car. And so it was that the last episode of the first season was never fully broadcast, and NBC chose not to commission a second season, which is not at all surprising, frankly.
