12 Awful TV Shows That Were Cancelled Before You Even Saw Them
4. The Hasselhoffs
In theory, this show was a great idea, because everyone loves David Hasselhoff, or at the very least enjoys mocking him. So how could a reality show detailing his family life with his two daughters be such an unmitigated disaster? Who doesn't want to watch a middle-aged has-been eating hamburgers while lying drunk on the floor? As it turns out, schadenfreude will only get you so far, and audiences were less inclined to watch the Baywatch star attempt to revive his career and force one for his daughters than producers would have hoped. After airing only two episodes, the show was pulled from A&E's schedule, the remaining episodes never to be broadcast in the US (though they did air in Britain, who have a far more finely tuned sense of the ironic.) In December 2010, A&E confirmed in a statement that The Hasselhoffs had been canceled, with ratings suggesting that the first episode was seen by 718,000 viewers, and that 505,000 saw the second installment, which aired on the same evening - so more than a quarter of those who watched the first turned off immediately after it. Hasselhoff blames the show's failure on it being on the wrong network, saying that A&E wasn't a great fit for the show they were creating. It might be possible to take that opinion one step further, and say that the show was airing in the wrong country - America just doesn't have the same enduring love affair with David Hasselhoff that some other countries do.
