12 Best Animated Superhero TV Shows Of All Time
4. Teen Titans
While DC fans have no problem showing their love for the Justice League, they're equally as crazy about its spin-off team (if you will) of young heroes. We are, of course, talking about the Teen Titans, so when the tight-knit group of youngsters got their own show in 2003, those fans couldn't have been happier.
Though not directly related to the DCAU in any way, Teen Titans did channel some of the devices that made those shows a success, employing mature storytelling while tackling dark and uncomfortable themes. It was specifically notable for its strong characterisation and how it used that to fuel the running storylines. Yeah, it may have been a superhero show, but the characters (and their emotional baggage) were every bit as important to it - something we saw through Robin's internal conflict over his past with Slade and his blossoming feelings for Starfire, as well as Raven's attempts to control her inner (and outer) darkness.
In a way, Teen Titans was an unusual show because its loud, in-your-face humour shouldn't have worked so well against the backdrop of its complex and gloomy narratives, but it did (so well, in fact, that it spawned a comedy spin-off series) as the often-jarring tones strangely went hand-in-hand with each other, reflecting how the youthful and energetic heroes took so well to fighting the dangers of the world.
Somehow, five seasons and a finale movie just didn't seem like enough...
