An exercise in utopian and corresponding dystopian storytelling, A Better World explores the idea of a universe where Superman crosses the line of murder, and the Justice League become the Justice Lords, their protection of the world and its safety becoming more totalitarian as a whole.

Like the Patriot Act episode, A Better World - remembered primarily for the Justice Lords - explores the idea of "The Greater Good" and how far people are willing to go to uphold it.

Despite presenting the Lords' interference as menacing, and a threat to the Justice League's own universe, their world is shown to be shining, clean, safe and peaceful, with the unsettling consequences of such a peace shown in places like Arkham, where Batman's most dangerous villains have been lobotomised, or with the lack of free press, as well as protesters running away in fear when their supposed "heroes" come onto the scene.

The story also presents the value of Wally West's Flash to the team being more than just its comic relief.
