12 Great Comic Book References In Buffy & Angel

4. Jean Grey/Dark Phoenix - Two To Go

jean grey the wolverine In the Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode "Two To Go", Andrew Wells and Jonathan Levinson are in a jail cell accused of being Warren Mears' accomplices in his shooting of Tara Maclay. As a result, an enraged, bloodlusted and hugely powered-up Willow Rosenberg is out to get them. She is telekinetically removing bricks from the wall of their cell and then lets out a magically-enhanced, blood-curdling scream, which prompts this exchange... Andrew Wells: "Aah! What is that sound? God, it kills." Buffy Summers: "We have to make a run for it." Andrew Wells: "Are you kidding? She's like Dark Phoenix up there! You expect us just to outrun her?" Buffy Summers: "Pretty much." "Dark Phoenix" is a reference to the Marvel character Jean Grey, who is occasionally possessed by an entity known as the Phoenix. In the X-Men movie X-Men: The Last Stand, when this occurred, Jean became colloquially known by fans as "Dark Phoenix". Andrew would also later refer to this particular version of Willow as "Dark Willow" in a reference to the same character.
