5. ER
Alex Kingston was no stranger to the world of medical dramas when she signed up for her aforementioned guests stint in Private Practice. The River Song actress became a household name in the US, and then subsequently all around the world, thanks to her lauded portrayal of Dr Elizabeth Corday in NBC's long running and critically acclaimed ER. She played the reputable role for 7 years, from 1997 to 2004, and was at the heart (pun intended!) of several of the show's most controversial and iconic storylines throughout her turbulent journey from intrigued intern to coveted Chief of Surgery at County General Hospital. She was more than prepared to take on the Doctor, then, being a bloody good one herself!
