When Mr. Peanutbutter and Diane visited Labrador Peninsula for New Year, they stayed with PB’s older brother, Captain Peanutbutter. With his younger brother, they were basically two peas in a pod, but when Captain was alone with Diane things got very dark.

When looking at his kids with Diane, he told her that they were going to die just like everyone else, and later asked her if she thought that the stars were little holes in the sky, sucking all the oxygen out until you couldn’t breathe. He felt small and meaningless.

He was feeling depressed because he had a twisted spleen, and had to undergo potentially risky surgery. This made him look at life in a completely different way, and think about how he could be leaving his wife and children behind.

He said that it is cruel to let people love you. All you are doing is promising that one day you will break their hearts. To most, love is the greatest feeling in the world, but to Captain Peanutbutter at this time, he couldn’t help but see it from another, much more depressing perspective.
