6. The Parallel Between BoJack & Secretariat

Though it should have been his dream role, BoJack’s time playing Secretariat just kept going from bad to worse. Arguably what hurt BoJack more than anything was the studio deciding to remove what he and his director believed to be a critically important scene between Secretariat and President Nixon.

He and Kelsey broke into the Richard Nixon Presidential Library in order to get the shot on their own, but when it actually came to acting the scene, BoJack struggled. He never allowed himself to cry in the company of others, and this was no exception.

Kelsey sat her actor down and gave him his motivation. Secretariat’s brother was dead, but the moment was bigger than that. It was the moment he realized that there was something inside of him that was broken, and could never be fixed.

Without even trying, BoJack nailed the scene. This was because it wasn’t motivation for him, this was the moment he realized that what Kelsey was talking about applied to him. He was broken and beyond repair, and the reaction he gave her was genuine. Only when BoJack was on his own later did he allow himself to cry.
