9. The Politician

Ryan Murphy has created an array of shows that range from dramatically gripping to satirically thought-provoking (with a lot of off-the-wall madness in between), but his latest offering, The Politician, is a mixture of both.

The first production from his new Netflix contract, it stars Broadway revelation Ben Platt as driven-to-the-point-of-obsession high school student Payton Hobart who is relentless in his bid to one day become president of the United States - something that makes him even more relentless to become student body president.

Walking a line somewhere between Murphy's previous offerings Glee and American Crime Story, the show is intentionally in-your-face but it cleverly uses the angsty high school environment as a microcosm of the political race, essentially highlighting all of its apparent highs and lows.

Some of it isn't for the faint of heart and there is a slight episodic issue here and there, but on a whole The Politician has a myriad of compelling narratives designed to keep you hooked no matter how off-the-wall they get, and Platt's stunning lead performance is complemented by the likes of Zoey Deutch, David Corenswet and Lucy Boynton while Gwyneth Paltrow delivers some of the finest material of her entire career and the incomparable Jessica Lange is as engaging as ever in one her most theatrical roles yet.
