12 Scariest Doctor Who Episodes

8. The Empty Child

The-empty-child Are you my mummy? It asks the same question again and again. It calls phones that aren't phones, turns on electronics, begs to be let in with the voice of a child. When it's around, radios play, empty tapes keep running, and typewriters move themselves. It follows you around everywhere you go, if you're poor Nancy. Not only does this little monster haunt Nancy and the other characters, it can also make you like it. It can hollow you out, give you injuries that are terrifyingly specific. It takes your face away from you, and makes you an automoton. It's done this to hundreds of people. And soon it will do this to everyone on earth. But the scariest bit of the episode is in the hospital, when Doctor Constantine knocks his cane on a bin and every man and woman leaps upwards. They're all dead, but they haven't died. They're just empty, asking for their mummies. It's one of those things that gets scarier the more you think about it, and that's saying quite a lot.
