12 Small Details You Only Notice Rewatching Gilmore Girls
2. Musical Cast
The cast of Gilmore Girls is filled with actors who have been famous on Broadway and the show often likes to make references to their previous works.
Edward Herrmann (Richard) and Kelly Bishop (Emily) both won Tony awards in 1976, only by coincidence to be reunited in 2000 to play a married couple on Gilmore Girls. Notice how Emily absolutely loves musicals and often plays old tapes of them. Moreover, the show frequently mentions the 1987 movie Dirty Dancing, as a nod to Bishop’s role as Majorie Houseman.
Sally Struthers was cast after Liz Torres landed a role in the show, because the producers felt the two had amazing chemistry in the television series All in the Family and wanted them to carry that dynamic over to Stars Hollow. The acting duo have musical backgrounds which is why their characters are often involved in am-dram events within the town.
The character Brad Langford was taken out of the series for a short period because his actor Adam Wylie went on to perform in the musical Into The Woods. In the season three Chilton graduation, to explain his absence, Brad quite literally said he had been playing Jack in the Broadway musical of Into The Woods.
