12 Small Details You Only Notice Rewatching It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia
2. Glenn Howerton's Name In The Credits
The more perceptive Always Sunny viewer (i.e. the sort of lunatic who doesn’t skip the opening and closing credits of a sitcom when binge-watching Netflix) may notice that both Mac and Charlie use their real names for their characters in the show. These two characters are played by Rob McElhenney and Charlie Day respectively.
Glenn Howerton, however, has chosen to name his character Dennis. This is despite the fact that in their original pilot, his character was called Glenn. Howerton has gone on to say in several interviews that he made this decision in order to distance himself from the character as much as possible.
Whilst Day and McElhenney’s characters are hardly pillars of the community, Dennis is without a doubt the most morally corrupt and, in all honesty, downright evil member of the gang. We need only look at his sociopathic nature, his problematic sexual encounters, The D.E.N.N.I.S System or, of course, The Implication, in order to understand Howerton’s decision.
In a perfect world, viewers would be able to separate the art from the artist. Unfortunately though, considering that Game of Thrones actor Jack Gleeson has chosen to give up acting as a result of fan backlash after his brilliant portrayal of the villain Joffrey, Glenn Howerton has likely made a wise choice here.
