In the show's eighth season, an episode called Pop Pop: The Final Solution reveals that Dennis and Dee’s grandfather (or Pop Pop) was a Nazi back in World War 2. The gang also discover that he kept numerous pieces of memorabilia from this period including a hat, uniform, photographs and, most notably, a painting done by Adolf Hitler himself.

Later in the episode, after the painting of a German Shepherd is found, Charlie advises that it was actually he who did the painting, but that he believes it to be cursed and wants it destroyed. However, when Mac and Charlie burn the painting, he confesses that he had painted over what was on the canvas before. As the corner burns away, Hitler’s signature is unveiled beneath.

This is not actually the first time the painting appears, though. In the episode The Nightman Cometh, the painting can be seen on the set that Charlie builds for his play. Given that Charlie wrote this play in order to propose to The Waitress, who rejects him at the end of the episode, maybe this was one of the reasons that led Charlie to believe the painting was cursed in the first place.

The morale of this tale- Don’t buy art from fascists?
