12 Small Details You Only Notice Rewatching The Walking Dead
9. King
This is one for all you horror fans out there. In Season One, we are introduced to Rick Grimes and Shane Walsh, who are deputies in the fictional King County Sheriff's Department. The fictional county is named after Stephen King, the best selling horror author, as a nod to the writer from original showrunner Frank Darabont.
Frank Darabont, before adapting Robert Kirkman's comic series, had made a fantastic career in making a number of King tales for the screen. Key examples of his most celebrated adaptations include The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile.
Throwing a reference to King is a very clever move from Darabont, showing his respect for the horror maestro. But the brief reference doesn't end King's indirect involvement in the show, as it was later revealed that the author was set to write an episode of the show for Season Two, before Darabont had his famous falling out with AMC. With Darabont gone, this plan appears to have been scrapped.
It's amazing to see where the show is now, but an episode from Stephen King would have been something undeniably special. Nonetheless, King County is still alive and well in The Walking Dead canon, and that's pretty cool, too.
