From the very beginning, Todd was always something of an awkward kind of character, never really fitting in anywhere until he found BoJack's couch. His life was made vastly more complicated by the anxiety and confusion he felt about being asexual, which happened around the same time his old girlfriend Emily came back into his life.

He loved Emily more than a friend, and she felt the same, but in a time when he was struggling with his own sexuality, he didn't feel comfortable taking their relationship to the next level. He felt embarrassed about not being able to have sex with Emily, despite wanting to have a relationship with her.

After the event, Emily wound up at the hotel bar to drown her sorrows, struggling to understand why Todd wouldn't sleep with her, likely thinking that he didn't like her. She bumped into BoJack, who decided to comfort her by taking her to bed himself.

He should have talked to Emily about it, about how Todd was in a confusing time in his life, or even just sat and drank in silence with her. Any of these would have made him a better friend, instead of deciding to once again betray the trust and friendship of Todd Chavez.
