12 Upcoming New HBO Series To Be Excited About

11. Lovecraft Country

Aaron Paul Westworld
Universal Pictures

After finding great success with films Get Out and Us, Jordan Peele is at the forefront of socially conscious horror, and with Lovecraft Country he turns his attention to the small screen. An adaptation of the novel of the same name by Matt Ruff, Lovecraft Country blends the horror fiction of H P Lovecraft with a 1950s America where racism was rife. Expect cunningly crafted scares along with thoughtful social commentary.

The cast boasts Michael K Williams (The Wire’s Omar) among others, and Peele produces alongside the ubiquitous J J Abrams. Horror is traditionally a feature film genre (you can only sustain a scare for so long), but Peele is yet to put a foot wrong in his transition from sketch comedian to esteemed director.

His comedy chops are on the back burner in his film work but never abandoned entirely, tempering his work with a lightness of touch, so hopefully the same is true here. It goes without saying, but having a big name creative talent who is willing to discuss matters as substantial as racism is always important, especially one who can do so as gracefully as Jordan Peele has managed in the past.

The premise and source material would suggest that the horror here will take the form of full on monsters, which is something of a departure for Peele, whose scares have come primarily from psychological sources thus far. But with the likes of Abrams on the production team, you can bet that the budget will be put to good use. This should be a real winner for a spooky night in.
