12 Upcoming New HBO Series To Be Excited About

8. The Time Traveller's Wife

Forget about the 2009 film starring Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams. By the grace of HBO, Audrey Niffenegger’s sensationally successful novel is finally getting the adaptation it deserves. This rich and heady blend of science fiction and romance always had a little too much meat to be made neatly into a single feature film, so a TV adaptation might just be the perfect way to go about it.

The Time Traveler’s Wife is in its infancy at the moment, but we do know that it’s to be shepherded onto screens by Stephen Moffat. The former Doctor Who and Sherlock writer has proven time and again his ability with high concept drama as well as complex plots, so seems a terrific fit for the source material.

Audrey Niffenegger serves as executive producer (while the approval of the source material’s author isn’t a prerequisite for a successful adaptation, it certainly helps to have them on board). Love stories as a rule live or die on the strength of the chemistry between the subject couple, so casting will of course be vital here, but as a prestige HBO production, you’d imagine they would have their pick of the current crop of actors.

Even before the ball gets rolling in earnest, there’s much to be excited about in this project. The source material is rich and beloved, and Moffat is an experienced writer and a great fit. With luck, this could be a high quality weepie to cherish in the next couple of years.
