TV can be a great place for movie stars to jumpstart a career. The roles are often juicier, with the chance to dig further into a character, and remind audiences why you were a big star in the first place. Few have done this better in recent memory than Nicole Kidman, whose turn in Big Little Lies has contributed to a true return to form. Now, she’s doubling down with The Undoing, in which she stars and produces.

Working again with David E. Kelley, The Undoing is another series centred around a strong female lead whose life gradually unravels. She plays Grace Sachs, a successful New York therapist who thinks she has it all, until a cataclysmic event leads to her reevaluating her entire existence. This is Kidman’s stock in trade - there can be few actors around better at portraying characters who seem blissfully happy, but have a tumultuous inner life bubbling away just below the surface.

Starring alongside Kidman are Donald Sutherland and Hugh Grant. Grant has similarly experienced a recent resurgence through the medium of TV (giving a career best performance in A Very British Scandal). He plays Kidman’s husband, a role which appears ideal for him to show off his wicked, sleazy side - the best kind of Hugh Grant performance.

It will be directed in its entirety by Susanne Bier (the hugely talented Danish auteur, best known on the small screen for The Night Manager) and is scheduled for a limited run. For fans of Big Little Lies, this ought to tide you over until season three. For fans of acting, this will be the one to watch in 2020. Pen The Undoing in as an awards favourite already.
